Season 2 – Elo Reset, “the shake out”

Since the ELO reset last night, I have played about 4-5 games in ranked. Here are some observations that I have made regarding ranked play that may make you want to play or take a break for a while.

Basically, prior to the reset we had an ELO range from  close to 0 all the way to 2550. With 2550 being the absolute highest and 0 the lowest. What that means is, players that were 1600+ would tend to bump in to the same group of recognizable players. However, since the soft reset the rating range got compressed  and the new range became 1200-1500.

Here is what the soft reset means for you and I:

  • Queue times are shortened because the pool of players is so much larger in your ELO group.
  • There is a lot more variance in ranked games. Meaning you will see a lot more complete stomps, surrenders, etc.
  • Top ELO players will regularly get matched with 1200-1300 hundred players.
  • Players will see lots and lots of huge win streaks and loss streaks.
So in short, if you want to ride this reset, make sure you either very lucky or have a strong stomach, because anyone right now can win a lot or lose a lot based purely off of luck. After a week or two, you will see the elo range expand and the queues should be a lot more stable. Meaning the random chance that you get someone out of your elo will go down. Good luck summoners!

Post Patch Talon Feedback

Since Talon’s Release, I have probably played him about 5 times now. A few in normal games, and 2 in Ranked. My initial thoughts were, this guy is pretty strong. He has high damage and kill potential. If you get a couple of early kills, he can snowball really well. However, that was in normal games, where coordination is generally lacking. There’s a few things I noticed about him. Depending on what level you are playing him at, you have to build him or play him different.

I feel that in lower rating Ranked games or Normal games, where proper crowd-control-chaining is lacking, he is an awesome champion with lots of utility and killing potential. The kill potential comes from his incredible ad scaling and his further scaling from his gap closer. Building him full AD and insta gibbing a squishy was most satisfying.

However, I noticed that when I played him in ranked games at 2300 rating, people are able to counter him a lot better. Building him full AD pretty much let me hit W E RR Q then die instantly. Sure its a pretty good burst damage. But do you really want the champion you rely on for damage be the first to die? Building him full ad is like trying make him an AD caster with 1 escape spell, which is his ultimate (unreliable). Think Akali with 1 dash and no twilight shroud.

For me personally I find that if I build him as a tanky DPS, he would fare a lot better. No melee, should be able to go pure damage and survive in a real game. You simply die too fast a melee. For those of you that ask if he is worth buying? I’d say yes if you have a lot of IP to spare. No if you want a champion you can reliably main for a long time. He is just too new right now, not enough people know enough about him to roll face consistently. I suggest that you wait a week if you need the latest and greatest to try him out before making the purchase.

Some Basic Information on Spawn Timers and Gold Rewards

Hello everyone this is Dyrus and I’ve noticed that in our Game Mechanics section we don’t have one of the most basic things. As a player who has played this game for well over a year I still don’t know the spawn times on all creeps, and +gold count for each minion. So I will ask all of you using whatever knowledge that I have…

What the heck are some of these times and gold counts?

If you know something, post it in the comments! Lets make it known.

Gold Values and XP change throughout the course of the game, as Minions get stronger.

Summoners Rift

1:30 Minions Spawn – Continues to Spawn every 30 Seconds – Siege Tank Creep/ Cannon Creep w/e it’s called Every 3 waves.

1:40 Basic Jungle Creeps Spawn – After being cleared will Spawn 100 Seconds later.

1:53 Middle Creeps Begin Battle

1:54 Jungle Buffs Spawn – After Clear Will Spawn 5 Minutes Later

2:03 Bottom and Top Lanes Creeps Reach their lanes.

2:30 Dragon Spawns – After Cleared, it will spawn 6 Minutes later

15:00 Baron Appears – After Defeatet, it will spawn 7 Minutes later

Twisted Tree Line (I have no Idea)

1:30 Minions Spawn – Spawns Every 30 Seconds – Cannon Every 3 Waves

1:40 Basic Jungle Creeps Spawn – Every 100 Seconds

Knowing When To Go Back

A few days ago I visited my friends house, to check up on him after I heard he got in a car accident. When I got there, I saw that he was in a League of Legends game. When I sat down he asked me to give him some pointers so he play the game better. He was playing Akali top versus Corki and Janna. Within 5 minutes of the game he had gotten a double kill. His Akali was at 150 hp and at the enemy’s tower. Then I told him that he should go back. It wasn’t worth it to fight 2 enemies at 150 hp when they came back, and he was also open for a gank. With in 3 seconds of him finishing his blue pill Annie from mid had peaked out of the brush for a gank. In this blog I will briefly go over when to go back to your base. Too often, even in high elo matches, people do not go back to base when they should. Sticking around with low hit points, low mana, or under-geared will deny yourself farm or promote the the enemy to gank you!

Here are the scenarios in which you should start thinking of going back:

  1. It is the first 5 minutes and you have just killed the enemy and pushed to their tower. Their death timer just ended. You want to go back now because your enemy will be back in lane very soon. He will have bought, out gear you, and be at full HP. Going back now will make sure you can get back in lane fast enough so you can catch the creep wave before the enemy pushes it to your tower, denying you gold and exp.
  2. You just killed an enemy and you are at 200 HP. You want to go back immediately unless you know where their entire team is on the map. Anytime you kill a lane, the enemy jungler will already on their way to hold the lane. Stick around with low hit points is a sure way to get yourself ganked.
  3. There are 3-4 enemies pushing your tower and you are holding it alone. Think to yourself, can I completely decimate an entire creepwave in 2 seconds? If not you should go back. The enemy will dive you and most likely successfully kill you and take the tower. If your death timer is long, they make even take the next.
  4. It is 30+ minutes in, you just aced their team and with 3-4 members alive. However, they are all below 40% hitpoints. You are pushing their base tower and their resurrection timer is 5 seconds. It will take 10 seconds to finish it off and baron is still on the map. It is best to go back immediately and NOT finish that tower. You want to go back before they chase you back. If you are still there when they are all alive with full HP they can chase you down mid lane, potentially take a kill, and take baron. It is very easy to lose a game you are ahead by sticking around too long.
  5. Your team has dragon on timer and you are top lane. Dragon is going to spawn in 1 minutes and your team is preparing to do it. You should push top late as hard as you can, blue pill back to base, buy, then head to dragon as a group. Pushing the lane top will pull a member of their team to top lane to push it back. Going back to base makes sure that your team is as well equipped as possible. You should also do this with baron.
I know I only listed 5 scenarios and there are probably hundreds more I can list. But the important concept I want to convey here, is to not stick around too long. Make sure you upgrade your gear and inventory as much as your enemy does, so you never lose the advantage in lane, or when doing global objectives. Sticking around in lane below 60% promotes the enemy jungler to come gank you. If there is no way you can defend a tower along and assistance is too far away, it is better to go back to base, top off, and defend 1 tower in.
